A situation is an ‘animated suspension’, a state of things in which something that will matter is unfolding amid the usual activity of life. Online, the situation is spatialized as much as it is temporally distinct.

A sensation of ease and relaxation experienced when viewing calming content, visual rest in digital environments is often co-opted by streaming and hosting platforms to scrape user data and disengage subjects.

To be transparent is to render the self measurable, legible and knowable; to relinquish data (1). Because of this, transparency is associated with privilege and mobility. Transparent architectures are deployed to ease both docility and consumption.

Airspaces are the frictionless, nondescript, sterile and yet highly aestheticized, gentrified spaces of airbnb rentals, trendy cafes and ubiquitous modern condominiums. These spaces maintain an aesthetic much like a digital interface, balancing newness with familiarity to create an aesthetic that gives the illusion of a responsive yet totally universal experience. The mass proliferation of these homogenous spaces is decentralized, as lifestyle bloggers, renters and homeowners across the globe prize and mimic these aesthetics for their associations with class and wealth.

A feeling, or condition, produced when normative fantasy itself— begins slowly but quite visibly to erode in tandem with the destruction of the social institutions that once seemed to make it achievable, while nonetheless remaining an object from which people across social divisions cannot detach easily or without pain. This fantasy consists of the promise of a good life delivered to the subject, not only through the idea of the nuclear family but also to the state and the liberal public sphere (1).

This term is drawn from the book by Berlant, deployed to describe the diffusion, fraying, slow erosion or stuckness, the impasse as a feature of the contemporary moment. Unlike the past or the future, the present is what is affectively felt before it is conceptually known, emotionally codified in a legible way.

Conceptual space correlates to the spatial practices of a society (1). This term relates to the ways in which programs carry out in particular spaces in particular societies. It defines space that is designed, built, imagined, and imposed – as well as the ways in which people move about while navigating these spaces. This is the space of ideology and serves as the source for certain algorithms in control society that are carried out by machine learning Due to its material, infrastructural gaze, this kind of space informs the perceptual work of architects, planners, AI and commissioning rulers. The concepts formed in this strata of relations are in turn transformed into blueprints, training data, maps, models, political monuments, and surveyor’s grids that dictate the development of built space (2).
