Hola Avocado.

Hello Aguacate.

I had the chance to travel to Europe with my family a few years ago, and it was one of the nicest trips I’ve had. I was 11 years old and I remember that the week before, every night, I would be super excited and I would stay up until two in the morning. The night before, just in the afternoon, I got to thinking, and I just cried. I cried for about a half an hour, from sheer joy at my luck, knowing that very few people in Mexico get the chance to travel to Europe. That’s when it hit me, “dude, you’re going to another continent,” eventually I fell asleep close to 3:00 AM.

I woke up around five in the morning since the flight left at seven. As we left there was a ton of traffic — I don’t know if you’ve seen it, but traffic like what you can hear from grandma’s patio… and I was just, super nervous, what if we don’t arrive, you know? One of the things that I love most about airports is when you’re passing security and they make you raise your arms, I dunno, It just makes me feel like I’m in some movie. So we get through all of this, and arrive at the gate and finally the plane is ready and we board and, dude, airports, being inside an airplane, for me, is just incredible. It’s amazing, I feel like I’m in the clouds. We board and I remember being all hyped, excited, and then suddenly, I just fall asleep.

In France, we visited the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, the Arc de Triomphe, and those visits were very nice, but I remember being happy, even just in a van with my family listening to French music and looking out at streets completely different from those I’m used to. After Paris we went to Amsterdam and then to Belgium, and in Bruges I remember very clearly something I shared with my sister. The hotel was on the corner of a street and a small alley, going out you had to cross the alley and that’s how you arrived at the main street where there was a plaza. Something like a plaza, but outdoors. I remember when we arrived we saw a just absolutely delicious waffle stand, and I told my sister “we have to go.” We went alone to that spot and with our own money bought ourselves some waffles and ate them on our way back, and it was just a really nice experience with my sister.

The trip was really nice, full of memories, starting when we landed and we were locked up for an hour and a half — due to a bomb scare, to when we took a really nice boat ride in Paris, or when just out of nowhere in the streets of Bruges we came across a store of condoms of all colours and sizes. I apologize that I don’t know if an avocado tree can board a plane to Europe, but even if you can’t, ask Oscar to take you out for a stroll beyond the patio, and pay attention to the little details. Who knows, maybe the night before you won’t be able to sleep either.
