Testicle Tree “Did you know that Avocados get their name from the Nahuatl word for testicle?” said my grandpa. I looked up at him and his wrinkled face as he looked up at the avocado tree from the ground he was sitting on. “Why testicles?” I asked. The backyard my grandpa is on has been in the family for generations, and the avocado tree has accompanied us throughout. Grandpa is just the latest guy to take care of it. “Why do you think?” He used his knee to support himself while he stood up and went towards the tree. If the word for ‘avocado’ comes from the word ‘testicle’, then people used to call it ‘testicle tree’ with a straight face. I saw how the testicle tree obscured his face as my grandpa went under its leafy cover. “It’s not a testicle tree,” barked my grandpa, “is that all you’re learning in school over there? To have a gross mind?” Chale. I shouldn’t be surprised that he read my mind, my family has always said that we’re very alike. It reminds me of something that has to do with apples falling close to their tree. In this case, testicles? “It was called that because of its … fruit?” he said, wondering about his last word. “Not because of anything else like its seed or its size. Or the fact that they grow in pairs.” He reached up and snapped one of the gonads off the tree. I didn’t smile at this because I knew he would hit me upside the head if he could. He walked back towards me with the avocado in hand. “One is always slightly higher than the other for some reason.” He smirked and showed me the greenish-black fruit. “Should I show this to a doctor?” I did laugh this time around, waiting for his smile to give me the green light. “It's nice to see you abuelo” “I wonder if you could grow one of these seeds over there.” He said. “I think that would be great.” “I don’t think an avocado from your garden would work over here. It gets too cold” His face made more wrinkles as he thought about what I said. “You turned out fine” he said, “I never had a doubt that you would.” “Thank you abuelo. That means a lot” “Do you know when you’re going to visit again? It’s been a long time since la-“ His face stopped and grew pixelated. He never uses the internet in his house. Except to read the news, so the cheap phone and internet package he got works well for him most of the time. It wasn’t meant to sustain long video calls. “-st time” he resumed. “M’hijo, are you still here?” “Yeah, still here.” I said. “and I’m not sure.” I could see he was still trying to figure out what happened with the connection, “School is taking up all my time, and I am starting to work now.” I continued. “Always hard working” he smiled. “Are you making time for your girlfriend?” I looked up at his smile and nodded. I hadn’t told him we had broken up and that I was seeing someone new. A silence took over our conversation. I checked the time of the call, it had been almost 2 hours already. “I think I’m gonna go, abuelo. I have some work to do.” I said, “plus it's probably late for you now. It’s already 7:00 pm over here.” “I really think you can grow one of these over there” he held the avocado and spun it slowly to show all its sides, like a Fabergé egg. “The testicles of our family have always been strong,” he said with a smile. There was no way I could not laugh at that. We said goodbye. I told him I’d talk to him next week, and then we said goodbye again. He told me something about my uncle and his new wife, and then we said goodbye one last time. I closed my laptop and went to shower as I was preparing to go see ‘someone new’. On the way to the washroom, I could not help but think of the plants I’ve (killed) failed to keep alive in my apartment. No debería de estar sorprendido que leyó mis pensamientos, mi familia siempre a dicho que nos parecemos un buen. Me recuerda de un dicho que tiene que ver con unas manzanas cayendo cerca de su árbol. En este caso, ¿testículos? “Se llamaba así por sus… frutas?” el dijo, considerando esta última palabra. “No por cualquier otra cosa como su hueso o su tamaño o el hecho de que crecen en pares.” Levantó la mano y a jalón bajo uno de los huevos del árbol. No sonreí, consciente de que me diera un zape si pudiera, caminó de regreso hacia mi con el aguacate en la mano. “No se porque, pero uno siempre está un poco más arriba que el otro.” Sonrió y me enseñó la fruta verdosa y oscura, “debería enseñarla a un doctor?” Esta vez sí me reí, esperando a la sonrisa que me daría permiso. “Es muy bueno verte abuelo” “Me pregunto ¿si pudieras sembrar uno de estos huesos por allá?” me dijo “pienso que sería bueno” “No creo que un aguacate de tu jardín crecería por acá. Se pone demasiado frío.” Crecieron las arrugas de su frente mientras considero mi respuesta. “Tú saliste bien,” el contesto, “núnca lo dudé” “Gracias abuelo, lo aprecio mucho” “¿Sabes cuándo nos vas a visitar de nuevo? Ha sido mucho tiempo desde la-” Su expresión se congeló y se pixeleo. Núnca usa el internet en su casa, solamente para leer las noticias, entonces su cellular y paquete barato le funcionan la mayoria del tiempo, no están diseñados para sostener largas videollamadas. “-última vez” resumió “M’hijo, ¿ahí sigues?” “Si, aquí sigo” le contesté “y no estoy seguro” Podía ver que todavía intentaba entender que le pasó a la conexión, “La escuela me ocupa todo el tiempo y ahorita estoy empezando a trabajar” continué. “Siempre dedicado” me sonrió “¿estás haciendo tiempo para la novia?” Miré hacia su sonrisa y confirmé, no le había dicho que habíamos tronado y estaba saliendo con alguién nuevo, un silencio sobretomó nuestra conversación, entonces vi la hora de la llamada, ya casi llevábamos dos horas. “Me tengo que ir abuelo, tengo trabajo que terminar” le dije, “además ya se te esta haciendo tarde, ya son las 7:00 aquí” “Si, pienso que puedes sembrar unos de estos allá” él sostuvo el aguacate y lo giró lentamente para enseñarme todos los lados, como un Huevo de Fabergé. “Los huevos de nuestra familia siempre han sido fuertes” dijo con una sonrisa. No había forma de no reírse.
