Greetings Avocado.

I was raised on a tiny island in The Bahamas, on a relatively large piece of land. Then and there you were so insignificant to me. A strong wind-hand felled your largest ancestor on our family plot, yet you still continued to bear children. A mighty warrior I always considered you to be, but our understanding of each other appeared to be at odds. When I first met you in a North American food store, the distant cousin of the pears I knew, I was so shocked by the lack of resemblance you had. You were small, blemished and your lifespan often was no more than a few days. I was accustomed to you being larger, smoother, radiating with a beautiful bright green, and taking much longer to reach your prime. Now you seemed so weak, all your strength lost through your journey.

While I was growing, you were too, but in another way, you were becoming the symbol for an entire generation. Yet with this fame your essence seemed to fade, your strength lost and to me, you became something different. Something I didn’t even recognize. This difference wasn’t so much off-putting as it was shocking, and it took me time and trying to consistently understand this new you. I still yearn for the old you, but I appreciate who you’ve become, for what you stand for, and thankful that you survived your journey to give me the chance to understand your change. My only hope is that we don’t abandon you when the world shifts, but even if the world does, I’ll still remember you as a mighty warrior.

Saludos Aguacate.
